Type locality, Nakagusuku Hama Fish Market, Nakagusuku Bay, Okinawa I., NSMT-P 73081 (ex URM-P 41079) (holotype.of Acanthopagrus chinshira, male, 20.4 cm SL). Known to occur known only from Nakagusuku Bay and Haneji Inlet, where it is not rare. Large and fully matured adults are caught around coastal waters of Okinawa Island in midwinter, when reported fishery of this species is carried out by using set nets, gill nets, and bottom long-lines. Juveniles ( < 10 cm) occur near shore from late spring to mid-summer. Midentified as Acanthopagrus australis by Akazaki 1984:178;pl.167-E (Okinawa I.) and as Acanthopagrus sp. in Akazaki 1997:353 (Sashiki, Nakagusuku Bay, Okinawa I.) and by Hayashi 2000:857,1567 (in part, Haneji Inlet, Okinawa I.) (Ref. 75207).
